The project described in this session is one of the winners of the 2019 Chevron STEM Education awards from the Fab Foundation! Learn how the Makerspace can enhance the experience of students in history, math, science, art, literature and more. Become a student in an African American History class and design and build an object that tells the story of freed slaves. Decide how you would evaluate your own work.

This session explores how making can take the place of a test or paper in a traditional content class. Topics include:
- How do students demonstrate understanding of a unit of study through creating a physical object rather than answering test questions?
- What are the benefits and challenges involved in active, hands-on learning vs. traditional classroom instruction?
- How do you assess a project when students have voice and choice in the form that project will take?

In addition to looking at student responses to this type of project, participants will run through the process on a small scale by researching a topic, working in small groups to design and build a prototype to respond to the topic, and evaluating their prototype.
